Water is pouring out: do this before the plumber arrives
A split pipe under pressure moves a large volume of water fast. Your goal in the first minutes is to cut the supply, protect electrical areas and slow the spread. Everything else can wait for the plumber.
Start with the main shutoff, which is usually where the water line enters the house, often near the meter. Turn the handle fully. If the valve is a round wheel, turn it clockwise. Then open the lowest faucet in the house to drain pressure from the lines, and open the highest one to let air in so the pipes empty faster.
- Close the main water valve completely.
- Switch off power to wet rooms at the breaker if the panel is dry and you can reach it safely. Never touch a switch or outlet while standing in water.
- Open a low faucet and a high faucet to drain the lines.
- Turn off the water heater power or gas control so the tank does not run dry and overheat.
- Move valuables, rugs and electronics, and photograph the damage for your insurer.
- Call call (508) 389-4045 and tell dispatch which room is wet.
Why pipes split in the first place
Pipes burst for three main reasons: freezing water, high pressure, and age. Ice is the loudest cause in a New England winter because water expands as it freezes. The split usually happens not where the ice sits but a little downstream, where pressure builds between the ice plug and a closed faucet.
Age shows up differently. Corroded steel, brittle plastic, and joints that have flexed with years of heating and cooling develop cracks that fail under normal pressure. Surges from a fast-closing valve or a failed pressure regulator can finish off a weak spot. We look for the cause during the repair, since fixing only the split section invites the next one.
Frozen pipes: thaw carefully or call before it splits
Westborough sits in the Sudbury and Assabet river headwaters, and winter cold settles hard in this part of Worcester County. Pipes in exterior walls, garages, crawl spaces and unheated basements are the usual casualties. If a faucet runs a trickle or stops, a pipe may be frozen but not yet split.
Thaw only when you can see the pipe and no water is leaking. Never use a torch or open flame, since that can ignite framing and damage joints. If you see a crack, a bulge or any wet spot, do not thaw. Close the main and call.
- Open the faucet served by the frozen line so melting water can leave.
- Warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer, a heating pad or warm towels, starting nearest the faucet.
- Keep heat on until full pressure returns, then check every joint for drips.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls so room heat reaches the pipes.
- If you cannot find the frozen section, or the pipe is already split, shut the main valve and call.
Copper, PEX and steel: what the repair looks like
The right fix depends on the material and where it failed. The table lays out the common repairs so you know what a plumber is describing when he or she opens the wall.
| Pipe material | Typical failure | Common repair |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Split from freezing or a pinhole from corrosion | Cut out the section and sweat in a new piece with couplings. |
| PEX | Split near a fitting after freezing | Cut and install a crimped or expansion coupling. |
| Galvanized steel | Corroded wall, leaking threads | Replace the run, since patches rarely last. |
| CPVC | Brittle crack at a fitting | Replace the fitting and inspect neighboring joints. |
| Cast iron or PVC drain | Cracked pipe, loose joint | Replace the section with new pipe and approved couplings. |
Copper pipe repair: sweated joints, pinholes and splits
Copper has served American homes for generations and still earns its place. A freeze split is often a clean lengthwise crack that a coupling repairs well. Pinholes are different. They are tiny leaks that develop from the inside out, sometimes in the same few feet of pipe.
When pinholes repeat, patching one only moves the problem. We check the surrounding pipe, the age of the run and any pattern in the water. Westborough water treatment includes corrosion control according to the MassDEP source water assessment, but that report is older, so ask for the current annual report and share it with your plumber if pinholes recur.
Cracked drain and waste pipe repair
Not every burst is on the supply side. A cracked drain pipe leaks wastewater instead of clean water, usually with a smell or a damp spot below a bathroom or kitchen. Causes include ground movement, impact during other work, and joints that have worn out in old cast iron.
We pressure test or camera inspect the line to confirm the break, then cut out the cracked section and replace it with new pipe and the right couplings. If the damaged run feeds a toilet or a main stack, we protect the rest of the system by making sure the new section is properly supported and sloped.
What happens after the water stops
Once the break is isolated, we open the minimum amount of wall to expose the damaged section, replace it, and test the repair under full pressure before closing anything. You will see the pressure hold on a gauge, not just hear us say it is fine. Then we bring the water back on slowly so the pipes do not hammer.
Drying matters as much as the repair. Wet drywall and insulation that stay damp for more than a day or two risk mold. We tell you what we see, but cleanup and drying belong to a restoration company or your own crew, and your insurer may direct you to one.
Pipes under a house that was built long before plumbing codes
Westborough was incorporated in 1717, and the town still has older buildings in places like the Vintonville and West Main Street historic districts. Homes of that age may carry pipe from several eras inside one wall, including iron, steel and copper that have been joined over time. Mixed materials leak where they meet, and old fittings may not match modern parts.
The practical result is that a burst in an older home often needs more than a patch. We photograph what we find, explain which sections are sound, and let you decide whether to repair only the break or replace a longer run. In historic buildings we also try to limit cuts in plaster and trim. For longer replacement work, see our page on repiping.
Where else we respond near Westborough
Burst pipes do not respect town lines, and neither do our dispatch routes. If you live in Hopkinton, where about 40 percent of residents rely on private wells, a burst can hit the pressure tank and well piping as well as the house, which our Hopkinton emergency plumber page explains.
For ongoing small leaks that have not yet burst, leak detection finds the source before it fails. And if the break was caused by a stuck or failing shutoff, a quick visit to replace the valve prevents the next emergency.
What changes the cost of a burst pipe repair
You get a clear price before work starts, and these factors set it.
Homeowner policies usually cover sudden and accidental pipe bursts, including much of the resulting water damage, though they often exclude damage from long-term leaks or neglected maintenance. Photograph everything, keep the damaged section if you can, and call your insurer promptly.
Not sure whether it is a repair or a replacement? Call and describe the pipe, and we will tell you what to expect.
The first ten minutes decide how much damage you see later. Close the main, protect the electrical, and call. Everything after that is a repair we can price clearly.
Code and standards note. Replacing a burst section is plumbing work regulated under 248 CMR 10.00 by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. Photograph the damage for your insurer before repairs, and ask the Building Department about permits for larger replacements.
Burst Pipe Repair questions from Westborough homeowners
Yes. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Shut the main valve, switch off power to wet areas if it is safe, and call. A licensed plumber is sent to your Westborough address to stop the leak and repair the pipe.
Look where the water line enters the house, often in a basement or utility room close to the meter. The valve is a lever or a round wheel. Find it before you need it and label it with a tag.
Only if you can see the pipe, nothing is leaking, and you use gentle heat such as a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If you see a crack or a wet spot, close the main and call instead.
Often yes. A clean split in good pipe is repaired with a coupling or a short replacement section. If the pipe is corroded in several places, we will tell you when a longer replacement makes more sense.
Many single-break repairs are finished in a few hours, depending on access and material. Hidden breaks inside walls or long replacements take longer. We tell you what we find before we begin.
Sudden and accidental bursts are commonly covered, but long-term leaks are often excluded. Read your policy, document damage with photos and call your insurer. We can provide a written description of the repair for your claim.
Pipes in unheated walls, garages and crawl spaces can freeze even when the weather feels mild, especially with wind. Age, corrosion and pressure spikes can also split a pipe without any freezing.
