A valve that will not turn off: the first five minutes
When a faucet or supply line is spraying and the little valve under the sink will not close, the main shutoff is your only brake. It is normally near the water meter, often in the basement or utility area.
Turn the main clockwise slowly. Open one low faucet and one high faucet to drain the pressure. Then call us so we can replace the failed valve or line before you turn the water back on.
- Close the fixture's stop valve first, and if it will not move, close the main shutoff.
- Open a faucet on the lowest floor to bleed off the pressure.
- Move anything electrical, rugs and cabinet contents out of the wet area.
- Take a photo of the failed part before it is removed, for your records.
- Do not force a corroded valve with a wrench, since the stem can snap and make the leak worse.
Kitchen and bath faucets: where the drip comes from
A faucet drips because something inside no longer seals. In a compression faucet it is the rubber washer or the brass seat. In a single-handle cartridge faucet it is the cartridge or its O-rings, and in a ball-style faucet it is the springs and seals.
Water that leaks around the base or the handle, rather than from the spout, points to worn O-rings or a loose packing nut. Water under the sink means the supply connections or the faucet body, and that is worth catching early because cabinets swell.
We replace the failing part when the faucet is otherwise sound. If the finish is pitted or the body is corroded, a new faucet is the better value, and we install the one you choose.
Fixture symptoms at a glance
This table covers the calls we see most often, with the usual cause and the usual fix. Treat it as a starting point and not a diagnosis.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Steady drip from the spout | Worn washer, seat or cartridge | Replace the cartridge or washer and seat. |
| Handle wobbles or leaks at the base | Loose packing nut or worn O-rings | Tighten or replace the O-rings. |
| Shower temperature swings | Failing pressure-balance cartridge | Replace the valve cartridge. |
| Tub spout leaks when the shower runs | Diverter worn or spout seal failed | Replace the diverter or the spout. |
| Weak flow from one faucet only | Clogged aerator or cartridge debris | Clean the aerator, flush the lines. |
| Burst braided supply line | Age or overtightening | Replace both lines and the stop valves. |
Shower valves and tub spouts
A shower that runs hot and cold is almost always the pressure-balance or thermostatic cartridge behind the handle. Replacing it means shutting the water to the bathroom and opening the trim, and the job is quick when parts are on the truck.
A tub spout that drips after the shower starts has a worn diverter. If the spout itself is loose against the wall, water can run behind the tile, so we check the seal and the wall around it before closing things up.
Persistent dampness around a shower valve is a leak inside the wall until proven otherwise. Our leak detection work uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find it without opening the whole wall.
Tub and shower drains that back up
Most slow tubs are hair and soap held in the strainer or the first few inches of pipe. Before you call, try these in order.
- Remove the stopper or strainer and pull out whatever has gathered.
- Pour hot tap water, not boiling, down the drain to soften soap film.
- Use a plastic drain zip tool rather than a chemical drain cleaner.
- Check whether other fixtures gurgle, which suggests a deeper blockage.
- Call us if the water rises in a second fixture, since the main branch line needs clearing.
What Westborough's water treatment means for your fixtures
MassDEP's source water assessment lists the Westborough Water Department's nine groundwater wells and one reservoir. It also notes that corrosion control is applied with potassium hydroxide and zinc orthophosphate. The report is older, so check the current annual water quality report for today's treatment.
No one can read hardness from a single spec sheet, so we do not guess it. The useful habit is to check aerators and showerheads twice a year. If grit or scale builds on them, tell your plumber, and ask the utility for its latest water quality numbers.
Stop valves, supply lines and the parts under the sink
Under every sink are two stop valves and two flexible supply lines. The braided lines are rated for years, not decades, and an old one can burst without warning when you are away. If you cannot remember replacing them, replace them.
Multi-turn gate valves in older homes often seize or leak when turned. We replace them with quarter-turn ball valves so that the next emergency has a shutoff that works. Where the wall is open or the cabinet allows, we also add a supply line to the dishwasher or ice maker if it is missing.
Nearby service and next steps
Calls come from across the area, including Shrewsbury, where an older house may still have its original stop valves. If your fixture trouble is really a pressure issue, our water line repair page explains how low pressure is diagnosed.
What drives faucet and fixture repair cost
You get a clear price before work starts. These are the things that move it.
Sudden water from a burst supply line is typically covered as accidental damage, but the faucet itself is wear and tear. Report the loss quickly and keep the failed part.
For your real number, call and tell us the fixture and what it is doing.
Fixtures are small, but a failed one can ruin a kitchen floor in an afternoon. Fix the part while it is a drip, or call the minute it turns into a spray.
Code and standards note. Fixture repairs and replacements are plumbing work under 248 CMR 10.00. If you are unsure whether a valve or supply line job needs a permit, the Westborough Building Department can tell you.
Faucet and Fixture Repair questions from Westborough homeowners
Yes. Our dispatch line is staffed day and night, and same-day appointments are offered when available. If water is flowing, close the main shutoff first and call us from there.
The seal inside the faucet has worn. In cartridge faucets it is the cartridge and O-rings, in older faucets the washer and seat. Dripping wastes water and the sound is rarely the whole story.
Repair when the body and finish are sound and parts are available. Replace when the faucet is corroded, pitted, discontinued or already repaired several times.
A worn pressure-balance cartridge no longer evens out the hot and cold. It can scald, so replace it soon and set the water heater no higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
Shut the main water valve, usually beside the meter, and open a low faucet to drain pressure. Then call us to replace the line and the failed valve.
Plumbing work is regulated by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters. You can verify a license with the state's Check a license tool on mass.gov before work begins.
